1.3 Ordering Numbers

Ascending Order = Going Upstairs ↗

Arrange numbers from the smallest value to the largest value.

3- Arrange the numbers in ascending order.
a) 632101, 63211, 750310 , (-321).
(-321) , 63211 , 632101 , 750310
b) (-7732), (-982), 98, (-10000).
(-10000) , (-7732) , (-982) , 98
šŸ“Œ Quick Strategy for Negative & Positive Numbers
  • ā— Negative numbers are always smaller than zero and all positive numbers.
  • ā— For negative numbers, the further away from zero to the left, the smaller it is:
    (-10000) < (-7732) < (-982) < (-321)
  • ā— For positive numbers, count digits first: 5-digit number 63,211 is smaller than 6-digit numbers 632,101 and 750,310.

1.4 Rounding
Which of the numbers in the examples below are rounded?
TV
Wind speed is around 100 k/hr.
āœ” Rounded (around 100)
About 30000 people are expected to participate.
āœ” Rounded (About 30000)
Today's temperature is 36.4 c°.
āœ– Exact / Not rounded (36.4)
I am 132 cm tall
āœ– Exact / Not rounded (132 cm)
Exercises
1- Is the number 79842 closer to 79000 or to 79800? Why?
It is closer to 79800 because the difference is only 42 (79842 - 79800 = 42), while the difference from 79000 is 842.
2- Round these numbers to the nearest hundred.
a) 248
200
b) 767
800
c) 4871
4900
3- Round these numbers to the nearest thousand.
a) 5291
5000
b) 17820
18000
c) 26684
27000

1.5 Powers and Roots

The power of a number means the number of times the number is multiplied by itself.

It is written as a small number to upper right of the base number.

base āž” 4 2 ⬅ power
42 = 4 Ɨ 4 = 16
In words 42 could be "4 to the power of 2"
or simply
4 squared
So, when the power = 2 we use the word "squared".
Note:
Another name of power is exponent
Exercises
1- Complete the following:
Then 52 = 5 Ɨ 5 = 25, In words: Five squared.
a)
62 = 6 Ɨ 6 = 36
b)
72 = 7 Ɨ 7 = 49
c)
82 = 8 Ɨ 8 = 64
d)
92 = 9 Ɨ 9 = 81
e)
102 = 10 Ɨ 10 = 100
f)
112 = 11 Ɨ 11 = 121
g)
122 = 12 Ɨ 12 = 144

Ascending Stairs & Number Line Lab 🪜

Ascending order means climbing upstairs from smallest to largest! Test positive & negative integers.

šŸƒ The Ascending Staircase Challenge

Tap the numbers below in ascending order (smallest to largest) to place them on the steps. Watch Sammy climb to the top!

AVAILABLE NUMBERS (Tap to place on the next stair):

šŸ‘‰ Tap numbers in ascending order from lowest value to highest value.
ā„ļø Negative vs. Positive Integer Comparator

Compare any two numbers to see which is greater. Remember: For negative numbers, (-10000) is smaller than (-321) because it is further left on the number line!

<
Explanation: -10000 < -321 because -10000 is much further to the left from zero.

The Rounding Rollercoaster & Estimation Lab šŸŽ”

Watch numbers ride the rollercoaster hill: Digits 1-4 roll down, Digits 5-9 roll over the top to round up!

šŸŽ¢ The Rounding Hill Simulator

Choose a textbook problem or enter any number. Watch the cart travel up the hill and see the exact rounding rule in action!

ROUND TO:
PRESETS:

⬇ Digits 1, 2, 3, 4 āž” Roll Down ⬆ Digits 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 āž” Roll Up
šŸ’” In 248, look at the tens digit 4. Since 4 < 5, the car rolls down to 200!

LESSON 1.3 • ORDERING Question 1 of 10
Which number is the smallest among: (-321), 63211, 750310, and (-10000)?
Correct! (-10000) is the most negative, so it is the smallest.
